What we’re not drinking this evening:
And this is why:
Ah, that’s better:
Much better.
We’ve had the Cristal for over two years, it was purchased while I was pregnant and we just never got round to it somehow until today. However, with the shape of that cork we knew we were in trouble. The Champagne wasn’t vile, just flat, bland and with a vague, but unpleasant off-note. On the whole we decided it was not worth drinking. We’ll get our money (lots of it in this case) back and bank on there being an opportunity for tasting an unblemished bottle of Cristal somewhere in our future.
We have several more bottles of bubbly (including Champagne) in the house, but the only other cold one was this Pongrácz (South African bubbly with pinot noir and chardonnay – and methode cap classique) that the husband picked up in Sweden recently. It’s not exactly the bees knees, but very drinkable and certainly better than corked Champagne. On the nose it reminds me of fermented apple juice (as I like cider, this is not a bad thing), and the taste is pleasantly dry (though not as bone dry as one could, perhaps, wish) and sparkly, but somewhat one-dimensional. Still, at the price (109 SEK) we might just buy it again.
And with that I wish you all a very happy new year. I’ll be back with more baking adventures, possibly tomorrow. And there might be some whisky and such in 2009, too, I suspect.
